New Jersey has established a legal recreational cannabis market for adults 21 and older, giving residents and visitors a regulated way to purchase cannabis products from licensed dispensaries.
Whether you are completely new to marijuana or already know what type of product you prefer, understanding the basics can make your dispensary experience much easier. From cannabis flower and pre-rolls to vapes, edibles and concentrates, today’s dispensaries offer a wide variety of options.
This guide covers the basics of buying recreational cannabis in New Jersey, the different product categories available, and what adults should know before visiting a dispensary such as GSNG Dispensary in Kingston.
Is Recreational Cannabis Legal in New Jersey?
Yes. Recreational cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older in New Jersey.
Adults who meet the legal age requirement can purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries. The regulated market is designed to provide consumers with access to tested cannabis products through licensed businesses.
Because cannabis laws and regulations can change, consumers should always follow current New Jersey requirements and the policies of the dispensary they visit.
Cannabis, Weed and Marijuana: What's the Difference?
You may hear several different terms used to describe cannabis.
Cannabis is the broader and more formal term commonly used for the plant and its products.
Marijuana is a widely used term for cannabis, particularly when referring to products containing THC.
Weed is a common informal term used by consumers when talking about cannabis.
For shoppers, these terms often refer to the same general category of products. That means someone searching online for a “weed dispensary,” “marijuana dispensary,” or “cannabis dispensary” may be looking for the same type of licensed retail experience.
What Can You Buy at a New Jersey Cannabis Dispensary?
Cannabis dispensaries offer products in several different formats. Your choice may depend on your preferences, experience level, desired consumption method and how quickly you want to feel the effects.
Cannabis Flower
Flower is the traditional form of cannabis.
It consists of the dried and cured buds of the cannabis plant. Flower is available in different strains and varieties, with differences in aroma, flavor, cannabinoid content and terpene profiles.
For consumers who enjoy the traditional cannabis experience, flower remains one of the most recognizable product categories.
Pre-Rolls
Pre-rolls provide a convenient alternative to purchasing loose flower.
The cannabis is already rolled and ready for consumption, eliminating the need to grind flower and prepare it yourself.
Pre-rolls can be particularly convenient for consumers who want a straightforward option when purchasing recreational marijuana.
Cannabis Vapes
Vaporizer products provide another popular way to consume cannabis.
Vapes can come in different formats and may contain cannabis oil or other cannabis extracts. They are often selected by consumers who prefer a compact and convenient option.
As with any cannabis product, consumers should review the product information and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Edibles
Edibles are cannabis products designed to be consumed rather than inhaled.
They can include a variety of formats and are known for having a different onset and duration compared with inhaled cannabis.
If you are new to cannabis edibles, carefully reviewing the serving information and following the product’s directions is particularly important.
Concentrates
Concentrates contain cannabis compounds in a more concentrated format than traditional flower.
Because concentrates can be significantly more potent than flower, they are generally better suited to consumers who understand cannabis products and their effects.
Accessories
A dispensary may also carry accessories that complement cannabis consumption.
Depending on the dispensary, these can include items designed for storing, preparing or consuming cannabis products.
